Question 1

Please read the following client session carefully and answer each question thoroughly on this document. You may put the answer to each question under the number you are addressing. Please pay close attention to each question and make sure you are providing the appropriate references.

Makayla is a 16-year old African-American client who recently discovered she is pregnant.  Makayla and her boyfriend, Darrell, have been dating for about one year.  Prior to meeting Darrell, Makayla was very involved in her local church.  She sang in the church choir and was an active member of the youth ministry.  Makayla had made a commitment so remain a virgin until she was married.  She presents for counseling with her mother.  As you speak to Makayla, she tells you that her mother does not know about the pregnancy.  Makayla states that “until I decide what to do, I don’t want her to know.  If I have an abortion, she never has to know about any of this.”  Makayla goes on to share that she is fearful that her mother will be disappointed in her and that their close relationship will be changed forever.  She also feels immense shame when she goes to church each week.  She feels like the ‘ideal, wholesome person’ that the other parishioner’s see is fake.  Makayla is struggling to not only accept her pregnancy but to accept the ‘non-ideal’ person she has become.

Now, based on your reading this week and the client session above, answer the following prompts:

1.  Construct two reflection of meaning statements that elicit meaning (see slide 8).

2.  Construct two reflection of meaning statement that use value words (see slide 12).

3.  Select one of the theories identified on slides 17 and 18 of the power point and briefly discuss interpretation/ reframing from that theories perspective.   How would you view Makayla’s case from this theoretical perspective?

In order to adequately complete this discussion assignment, you must answer all three prompts thoroughly and MUST cite one peer-reviewed journal article when responding to prompt #3.
