Narrative Therapy PowerPoint Presentation
Model of narrative therapy/ Assumptions of the model- Nice bulleted points here – just be sure to expand upon each Narrative intervention to really demonstrate your knowledge when discussing the model AND REVIREW FOR TYPOS.
A family therapy model helps to address family conflicts by improving the interaction and communication of the members.
The therapy adopts the externalization model where the therapist leads the family member to view their problems as external.
A narrative therapy model in a family model helps separate the members from the problems they experience (Clarke, 2020).
Assumptions in the externalization narrative family model is that the recovery process basically is determined by the ability of the client.
Another assumption is that the person is never the problem rather the problem is the problem caused by the surrounding factors.
How is the model systemic/indicate change- I would also include the cybernetics and first/second order change assumptions of this approach and how the philosophical assumptions are postmodern with references to support
The externalization model is systemic to family therapy as major family conflicts happen due to the lack of control of the problems bringing up the conflicts (Ackerman, 2020).
Hence the model is effective in reducing conflicts hence separating them from the problems affecting them.
The model indicate change by first locating the problem not within individuals but as products of history, culture and surrounding environment.
Afterwards individuals realize that they and the problem are not the same thing hence change in behavior starts happening.
Major concepts in the model
The externalizing model was introduced in early 1980’s to the field of family therapy and developed from work with children.
The model is easier to describe than to embrace, however, it has extensive positive effects on confidence and self identity of the family members.
The major concept of the model is to change the behaviors individuals posses than the core personality characteristics.
The therapists have a significant role in empowering their clients to enable them separate from their problems.
The clients should have a higher control in their identity to be able to separate from their problems.
Interventions of Narrative Therapy
The first intervention is the statement of position map where the client names the problems, mapping the effects of the problems on the family, evaluation of the effects caused by the problem, and determining the values that arise when thinking why these effects are undesirable.
My life story intervention involves the story telling time. The client writes down their story; it is important as they find healing and meaning through the process. It separates one from their past and help them focus on their life.
The last intervention is the expressive arts where the clients express the problem in their way. For instance, through meditation
Indications/contraindications of Narrative Therapy
Indications of the therapy include people realizing that they are the experts in their own lives. They have the role of changing or remaining in the same problems.
Establishment of trust and rapport with the family members is another indication of the therapy. The therapy involves assisting individuals hence trust is of significance.
One contradiction of narrative therapy is that people consult to tell specific stories about their lives yet a great category consult to share problems
Another contradiction is that the therapy separates one from problems yet in real it becomes hard if no material support is offered other than discussing the problems.
Research support of Narrative Therapy- be sure to have 3 different Peer Reviewed studies that reference using this approach and how its useful – typically the faculty like to see 3 examples here
Stokes (2014) presents a study of narrative therapy applied in the adoption of children among families.
Narrative therapy can be applied with adoption triad members in the family. Developing coherent narratives on the experiences of the members helps families gain abilities and work towards solving their problems.
The author has shown the adoption of narrative therapy method with individuals, families, couples, and family clients experiencing adoption issues (Stokes, 2014).
The method assists in understanding adoption experiences that contribute to conflicts such as between families and couples.
Strengths and weaknesses of Narrative Therapy,- highlight the social justice and cultural aspects of Narrative as this approach prides itself on being more culturally competent and focused on social justice issues than other postmodern models
One of the major strengths of the therapy is that it allows individuals to live in a way that reflects their goals and values (Ackerman, 2020). They appreciate and become happy of the lives.
It also enable individuals posses more power for growth and change as they dictate what to do and avoid to minimize problems in life.
One weakness of the approach is the inability of the clients to express themselves . At some point they lack confidence and the intellectual capacity to express the problems they experience.
Another weakness is the therapy lacks a specific formula. It depends on the relationship built between the therapist and the client.

Treatment Plan for Narrative Therapy- format the powerpoint so that there are headings for each intervention you are focusing on – this would allow your approach to be highlighted and stand out instead of each point looking similar with just text – can also include visuals for more creativity.
The treatment plan involves adopts there approaches. The externalization of the problem. It involves the evaluation of the problem, its effects and justifying the evaluation.
The second treatment approach involves re-authoring the conversation by renewing the relationship by removing the relationship that does not suite the clients (Ackerman, 2020). The therapist convince the client that the story is no longer a problem.
The last treatment approach is engaging the client in positive conversations by reminding them the conversations that they were actively engaged in. It helps them forget their problems and see the story as a motivator.
Implementation of the Narrative Therapy
The implementation process of narrative therapy incorporates four approaches. The first approach involves developing the narrative to understand and share the story between the two parties.
The next step is convincing the clients that they are not the problem rather they are human beings moving through life experiencing difficulties.
Deconstruction approach where the stories of the patient are broken down to void anxiety, being overwhelmed, and seeing the problem too big (Anderson, 2019).
The last approach involves developing the solution to the problem. The therapist shows the client alternatives to end the challenges.

Conclusion on Narrative Therapy
Narrative therapy is effective in assisting families to overcome problems that contribute to increased conflicts.
Narrative therapy creates emphasis on the stories we develop and carry with us in our lives.
The model is significant in raising our self esteem and confidence that can be degraded by the problems we undergo.
The model urges people not to view themselves as the problems or broken to be able to overcome the problems affecting them.
